Food along with water and air form the base of our life. Metal in which food is prepared is very important and were very much part of our lifestyle until recent past. Use of various metal according to food/water is used to balance 5 elements (panch tattva). Use of various metals not only brings an exotic touch and distinct taste to your kitchen but can also be used as roadmap to pure bliss!!! Truly, way to human heart is through their stomach.

  1. Brass (Pital) Topia: Brass is alloy of copper and zinc. Traditionally Brass utensil was used to boil milk or make kheer. Once milk/kheer cools down, it should be transferred to another utensil. Brass is NOT used to store food for long period of time. Brass balances our Earth element and brings solid stability in life. It also fortifies Mooladhara Chakra.
  2. Copper (Tamba) Jug: Traditionally Copper utensil was used to store/drink water. Copper utensil is to be regularly cleaned. Copper balances our Fire element and brings confidence in life. It also fortifies Manipur Chakra.
  3. Cast Iron (Loha) tawa: Traditionally Iron tawa is used to cook roti/chapatis. These are made of pure Mild Steel (MS). Use of non-stick or tawa with any other surface coating is not recommended for daily usage. Kadhai and Sizzler plates made of Iron are also used. It balances our Space element and brings vastness in life. It also fortifies Visuddhi Chakra.
  4. Aluminium cooker: Normally every house has aluminium pressure cooker and kadhai. Baking utensils are normally made of Aluminium. It balances our water element and brings flow in life. It also fortifies Swadhisthan Chakra. Activation or fortification of Swadhisthan should be avoided and so should be Aluminium utensils.
  5. Bronze (Kansa): Bronze is alloy of copper and tin. It’s the metal of choice for Ayurveda due to natural curing properties. Entire range of utensils are available in Bronze. It balances our air element and brings fun/happiness in life. It also fortifies Anahat Chakra.

* Avoid use of Brass, Copper and Bronze for foods containing vinegar, tomatoes, citrus fruits or acidic foods.

Many internationally renowned Indian chef’s (including Vikas Khanna from MasterChef) use these metals in their cooking. They have championed use of various metals in their signature dish to give that distinct traditional taste in their cooking.

Additionally, following two metals were used in daily household.

  1. Silver utensil: Use of silver balances mind and brings calmness. Hence it is responsible for treatment of anger and irritability (chidchidapan). Silver can be used in form of a silver coin in water or a silver spoon for eating food or a silver glass. Some people even go for entire dinner set made of silver.
  2. Gold: Use of gold strengthens heart and brings courage. Simplest way to bring gold in food is to boil water with gold coin or gold jewellery (without precious/semi-precious stones) in it.

Some people prefer to keep water in a utensil with gold, silver and copper coins in it.

Use of plastic/rubber/melamine in direct contact with food/water and during cooking/baking should be avoided. Use Stainless steel neither causes any harm nor does it offer any benefit. Use of earthen pots (remember Matka and kullad ki chai), glass and ceramic (remember china-mitti pickle jar) are recommended for food storage. Banana leaf or dried leaf plates (patal) are good for having food.
